PURE ONE VL-61085 Classic DAB Radio - BlackPURE ONE VL-61085 Classic DAB Radio - Black

Latest review: The Pure One Classic is my first DAB radio. I bought it from Amazon to replace my old Sony portable whose rechargeable batteries forever need changing, frustratingly just when I'm listening to something special! I also bought the Pure ChargePAK which fits inside a compartment in the back of the radio. It costs not much more than 2 sets of 4 rechargeable AA batteries and a charger. Fantastically it recharges whenever the radio is connected to the mains even when the radio is turned off so I keep the radio connected to the mains and simply pull out the plug at the back of the radio when I want to use it as a portable in the bathroom or shed etc. The on/off button is the medium size button bottom right in the photo. The large knob is the volume knob. To select or set the functions of the radio one simply presses one of the small silver buttons surrounding the large central knob then turn the large central knob clockwise to scroll through the options of that particular button. To select the required option just press the large central knob inwards. - Dead easy! The reception is good both in DAB and FM and the sound quality is really good especially when the bass and treble are tweaked to taste. The written instructions are good and clear. I enjoy the scrolling text advising of the current programme. I chose the white colour option which fits in very comfortably in the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom - much better than black. It also has a kitchen timer, an alarm function and a socket for playing an MP3 player although I haven't used these yet. I find myself listening to this radio much, much more than previously (I'm listening to it now in the background while I'm typing this) and without fear of the batteries running out. I really enjoy this radio. It is a November 2008 Which? magazine Best Buy so you can't really go wrong. I recommend it. 5/5

Pure PocketDAB 1500 Personal Rechargeable DAB/FM Digital RadioPure PocketDAB 1500 Personal Rechargeable DAB/FM Digital Radio
Manufacturer: Pure
Model: VL-60916
Average rating: 4/5 (37 votes)
Current price: £59.89 - buy
Latest review: I bought this for the daily train commute to listen to radio 4 and drown out those boring phone conversations that people seem to have without the slightest sign of embarrassment. The quality of the DAB reception is undoubtedly first class and well beyond FM as you can readily check as it does both. However, it is an all or nothing reception - it is either first class or it squawks and goes silent. It does seem to need a line of sight for reception ie not possible in tunnels, but view of the sky does not guarantee reception. On my journey into London the reception varies consistently at the same spots so the coverage is not even for some reason. Regarding the radio itself, the controls are fine and easily understood but the on/off switch is not positive and needs a lot of pressing to operate - I have left it on by mistake on numerous occasions. The radio is on the large side but feels light and unsubstantial but fits comfortably into a jacket pocket and the quality of the earphones is fine though I found them uncomfortably large so they always seemed loose. 3/5

Bush PSDAB2004 Personal DAB RadioBush PSDAB2004 Personal DAB Radio
Manufacturer: Bush
Model: PSDAB2004
Average rating: 4/5 (26 votes)
Current price: £32.00 - buy
Latest review: I bought the Bush radio largely for listening in bed without annoying others. It has proved to be a first class buy offering a huge range of stations, tremendous quality and good battery life. It is also very easy to operate, even straight from the box. I agree with comments that the headphone socket should be on the top in order that it might fit in a pocket, and a carrying case would be useful. I use Bang and Olufsen headphones and it works really well with these. I also use 2700Ma rechargable cells and find they give me about a weeks average listening. Appearance is a bit weird and decoration slightly zany but who cares. Lettering on the control buttons should be a lot larger especially for older people who need glasses for reading. Otherwise a really great little radio. 4/5

PURE EVOKE-1S (maple) Luxury portable DAB digital & FM radioPURE EVOKE-1S (maple) Luxury portable DAB digital & FM radio

Latest review: I have been using this model now for seven months, and apart from only getting about fifteen channels, when I thought I would get dozens as it's digital I am still quite pleased with it.But what really made me sit down and write this review is that I had to send it back today as it started playing up which does happen, (but you do get a two year warranty).Unfortunately you have to send it back to pure at your expense which is not cheap as you need to insure it as well for peace of mind. If you buy it from amazon like I did they will only exchange it within six months after which you will have to send it back to pure. Bear that in mind if you are buying one (it's a lot easier taking it back to a local store) under pures two year warranty. 3/5

Latest review: I read all the reviews before deciding on this DAB radio for my husband's birthday. Because we live in a reception blackspot which affects mobile phones and TV reception, I was half expecting it not to be able to pick anything up but my husband has been enthusing about the sound quality and number of channels he can receive. Availability of a rechargeable battery pack, which I also bought, was the deciding factor for me as other reviews suggest this type of radio eats batteries so it seemed like a worthwhile investment. However, Hubby is happy with using it on mains power until I get round to reading the instruction booklet. He managed without but tells me there is a clock and presets for me to set up too. 5/5

Latest review: I recently replaced my dire Roberts CRD29 DAB which was a nightmare. I couldn't be happier with the PURE VL-60907. It really is good - great reception (the ROBERTS often couldn't get a signal and so 'forgot' the time, so the alarm didn't go off) good sound, nice and compact (smaller than I was expecting), really good features ; especially the alarms - can be set separately weekday/weekend. No humming at all. Wish I'd got one earlier 5/5

Latest review: After receiving this radio at Christmas, I have been thoroughly impressed with it. I think the sound quality is very good and lives up to the luxurious wood finish. It is simple to use and can be set up to your preferences quickly; with thirty presets being more than enough. I bought this model over the similar Pure 1-XT due to the ingenious snooze handle and would recommend it to anyone who would use it as a bed-side radio. By Chris Perrett. 5/5

PURE Elan RV40, Portable Stereo DAB/FM Digital Radio with ReVu™PURE Elan RV40, Portable Stereo DAB/FM Digital Radio with ReVu™

Latest review: Compared with our old PURE Elan (Christmas 2005) the Elan RV40 is such a disppointment. Our first DAB radio was so easy to use; the 8 presets were not only a doddle to programme, but were a "one touch" operation to flit between, making it the ideal kitchen radio, in a busy teenager shared home. Sadly the on/off switch decided not to play any more, and after a month of leaving the radio on, and using the volume control instead, we decided to be more environmentally friendly and replace it. The RV40 was a mistake. To change the radio station, you must now press; the preset button, followed by the + button, for as many times, as to equal the number of the preset, and then press select. At a minimum that is 3 buttons to press, if like us you like BBC7 to be the seventh preset, good luck with your counting, and we hope that your children/ phone/ dog don't interupt you. Personally with 20 presets available, I'm not sure that you will use them all either. So one of the functions that we so loved on the old model has been so altered as to make it worthless, proving once again that change is not necessarily progress. 1/5

Intempo Digital TRS-01Bk Glossy Black DAB Transistor RadioIntempo Digital TRS-01Bk Glossy Black DAB Transistor Radio

Latest review: Can't quite understand the harsh reviews of this neat little radio set. It's the ideal portable radio for use in the garden, on a train or around the house. It's actually available in FIVE different colours! I bought this black one for my parents and they find it generally fit for purpose. Firstly, it's the only DAB radio I've ever seen for under 30 euro (£25)! It's also extremely light at just 525g (with batteries in). The sound quality is excellent for such a small set; it's clear without being "tinny". There's a rotary knob on the front that allows you scroll through the various radio stations available before you actually confirm that you wish to retune (takes a little getting used to but it's a novel feature). And changing channel within an ensemble is instantaneous; there isn't even the half-second delay you get with most DAB sets. Other reviewers dislike the incremental volume control but it doesn't seem to bother my parents. You can store up to 20 presets (10 DAB and 10 FM) and the screen is clear. There are two minor design flaws in my view; Firstly, the ON/OFF switch should be readily distinguishable from the other buttons and should be located AWAY from them. Secondly, the battery compartment looks as if it was designed by a jet-lagged COBOL programmer on cannabis! Use the mains whenever you can as that will save you the hassle of "digging out" the batteries. 4/5

Latest review: Interference-free DAB radio: DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) digital radio is, on top of FM analogue transmission, a new way of broadcasting radio via a network of terrestrial transmitters. It provides listeners with more choices and information delivered in crystal clear, crackle-free sound quality. The technology allows the receiver to lock on to the strongest signal it can be find. With DAB digital stations there are no frequencies to remember, and sets are tuned by station name, so there is no returning on the move.Bass Reflex Speaker System: Bass Reflex Speaker System delivers a deep bass experience from a compact loudspeaker box system. It differs from a conventional loudspeaker box system in the addition of a bass pipe that is acoustically aligned to the woofer to optimise the low frequency roll-off of the system. The result is deeper controlled bass and lower distortion. The system works by resonating the air mass in the bass pipe to vibrate like a conventional woofer. Combined with the response of the woofer, the system extends the overall low frequency sounds to create a whole new dimension of deep bass.Sleep Timer: Sleep timer lets you decide how long you want to listen to a radio station of your choice before falling asleep. Simply set a time limit (up to 1 hour) and choose a radio station to listen to while you drift off to sleep. The radio will continue to play for the selected duration and then automatically switch off to a power-efficient, silent stand-by mode. Sleep Timer lets you fall asleep to your favourite radio station without counting sheep or worrying about wasting power.Backlit LCD display. Mains or battery operated 01C0TNEQ/5
